Aadhaar from UIDAI now compulsory for your EPF Account

In a recent order The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has made it mandatory for new members to submit their Aadhaar numbers as part of the KYC (Know Your Customer) verification from March 1, 2013. This means that anyone joining salaried workforce needs to have Aadhaar number before March 1, 2013 or he might not be able to open EPF (employees’ provident fund) account.

In case you are among the 50 million existing EPFO subscriber, having EPF account, you need to submit the Aadhaar number to your employer before June 30, 2013.

In case of Pensioners, you would need to either submit your Aadhaar Number to the bank you are withdrawing pension from or to EPFO directly.

What should you do?

As a matter of fact there are only few who have been issued Aadhaar Number and it’s difficult to get Aadhaar Number in such a short time. It takes around 60 – 90 days after applying for the Aadhaar.

The saving grace is if you have not yet been allotted Aadhaar number you can submit the Aadhaar Enrolment ID number to EPFO. You get this Enrolment ID at the time of applying for Aadhaar Number from UIDAI. This enrolment identification would be converted into the Aadhaar number later on.

The EID number is a 28-digit number and works as your temporary enrolment ID (EID). Of these 28 digits, 14 digits will be the enrolment number and the remaining 14 digits will be the date and time of enrolment. This will be on top of your Aadhaar acknowledgement slip.

The Bigger issue!

Aadhaar started as a voluntary identification program from government but slowly it’s making it compulsory with different departments asking compulsorily for Aadhaar number. The latest to join this is EPFO. This is in a way forcing all salaried person and pensioners to get Aadhaar number. Next in line might be compulsory Aadhaar Number for LPG or your Bank Account.

This issue here is that getting an Aadhaar number is not as easy as it sounds. And, a number of Aadhaar-related frauds are being reported every few days.

    • Infact I read just now that EPFO has withdrawn the earlier notification and Aadhaar is not compulsory for the time being. I think EPFO needs to do its home work before it starts notifying :)

  • Thank you sir for this information. I recently applied for Aadhar card knowing something like this is going to happen. Strangely in the allotment centre, there were four tables with the laptops, scanners etc but only two were functioning. In one of the tables, i think they were selling the mobile numbers and other information.

    • Thats sad state of affairs :(

I read a few days back that even CBSE has made AAdhaaar compulsory for students to avail scholarship. I hope Govt. makes sure that Aadhar centers are functioning efficiently to cater to the large crowd expected.
