The government is pushing Aadhaar for all its citizens right from taking a new SIM for your mobile phone to filing your tax returns. Aadhaar is the NEW identity which you must remember or carry everywhere.

UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) which is the issuing authority of Aadhaar has come up with a new App – mAadhaar to solve for this. mAadhaar App enables to carry your Aadhaar in your mobile phone.

mAadhaar – Features

Your mAadhaar app can be associated with the mobile number which is updated in your Aadhaar database. If members of your family, for example children/spouse, have the same mobile number registered as you in their Aadhaar, you can add their profile to your device.

Only one Aadhaar can be active at a time. In case you create profile on other devise (by changing SIM) the profile on previous devise would automatically be deleted.

The app allows “biometric locking” of your aadhaar.

You can share your digital Aadhaar copy for e-kyc purpose by selecting the option from the drop-down menu. You’ll be asked for your password before you are able to share your Aadhaar details for e-kyc.

How to download mAadhaar?

mAadhaar is available on Google Playstore and is available for Android version of 5 or above. Older phones may not be able to download this app.

The app can be downloaded only on mobiles which have number registered with the UIDAI database.

Make sure you choose the right app as there is hundreds of fake Aadhaar app on playstore.

Steps to Use mAadhaar

Once downloaded the first step is to set up a password. The password should be 8 – 12 characters long with atleast one number, one special character and one Capital letter alphabet.

As you login you can either enter your Aadhaar number manually or scan the QR code on Aadhaar card

The app then sends an OTP and auto-verifies the information. One interesting part is you cannot manually type the OTP received, which is an added security feature. Due to this you’ll have to give app permission to read and send SMS from your cellphone.

The app is in beta stage and with upgrades would have more features. The present rating of 3.3 on playstore is NOT encouraging My personal take is this app might be useful in future as government links more and more services like flying, taking trains/buses etc with Aadhaar and eKYC becomes common (The way it’s going I think this is NOT distant future).
