I am sure majority of readers of this blog would have PAN Number (Permanent Account Number) issued\u00a0by the Income Tax Department<\/strong>. But do you know what does the digits in PAN Number mean?<\/p>\n

Below is a sample of PAN Number.<\/p>\n

It is a 10 digit alpha numeric number, where first five characters are letters, the next four numbers and the last one a letter again.<\/p>\n

These 10 characters can be divided in five parts as can be seen below. The meaning of each number has been explained further.<\/p>\n

\u00a0PAN Number Explained:<\/h2>\n

1. First three<\/strong> characters are alphabetic series running from\u00a0AAA to ZZZ<\/span>
\n2. Fourth character<\/strong> of PAN represents the status of the PAN\u00a0holder.<\/span><\/p>\n

  • P \u2014 Person<\/span><\/li>\n
  • H \u2014 HUF(Hindu Undivided Family)<\/span><\/li>\n
  • F \u2014 Firm<\/span><\/li>\n
  • A \u2014 Association of Persons (AOP)<\/span><\/li>\n
  • T \u2014 AOP (Trust)<\/span><\/li>\n
  • B \u2014 Body of Individuals (BOI)<\/span><\/li>\n
  • L \u2014 Local Authority<\/span><\/li>\n
  • J \u2014 Artificial Juridical Person<\/span><\/li>\n
  • G \u2014 Government<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    3. Fifth character<\/strong> represents first character of the PAN\u00a0holder\u2019s last name\/surname.<\/span>
    \n4. Next four characters<\/strong> are sequential number running\u00a0from 0001 to 9999.<\/span>
    \n5. Last character<\/strong> in the PAN is an alphabetic check digit.<\/span><\/p>\n
