So a 33% probability of negative returns if you are invested for just 1 year in stocks.<\/li>\n<li>The second thing to note is the<strong> returns from fixed deposits can also fluctuate a lot.<\/strong> In 21 years it has varied from 4% to 12%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now back to the question:<\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Stocks Vs Fixed Deposit \u2013 Which is better?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffcc00;\"><strong>Case 1: Twenty one year\u2019s period<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Below is the chart showing how much your money would have grown had you invested Rs. 1 Lakh each in Sensex and Fixed Deposits in January 1991 and rolled it every year till December 2011.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apnaplan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Returns-1-Lakh-is-invested-in-Sensex-Vs-Fixed-Deposit-1991-2011.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2008\" title=\"Returns 1 Lakh is invested in Sensex Vs Fixed Deposit - 1991-2011\" src=\"http:\/\/www.apnaplan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Returns-1-Lakh-is-invested-in-Sensex-Vs-Fixed-Deposit-1991-2011-1024x406.png\" alt=\"Returns 1 Lakh is invested in Sensex Vs Fixed Deposit - 1991-2011\" width=\"768\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.apnaplan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Returns-1-Lakh-is-invested-in-Sensex-Vs-Fixed-Deposit-1991-2011-1024x406.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.apnaplan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Returns-1-Lakh-is-invested-in-Sensex-Vs-Fixed-Deposit-1991-2011-300x119.png 300w, https:\/\/www.apnaplan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Returns-1-Lakh-is-invested-in-Sensex-Vs-Fixed-Deposit-1991-2011-170x67.png 170w, https:\/\/www.apnaplan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Returns-1-Lakh-is-invested-in-Sensex-Vs-Fixed-Deposit-1991-2011-284x112.png 284w, https:\/\/www.apnaplan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Returns-1-Lakh-is-invested-in-Sensex-Vs-Fixed-Deposit-1991-2011.png 1403w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As you can see <strong>there are only two years (2001 &amp; 2002) where your returns from fixed deposits beat returns from Sensex.<\/strong> This was time of Dot com bubble burst and Sensex had continuously given negative returns in last two years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So this proves that <strong>in the long run of 21 years \u2013 there is only 10% chance of fixed deposit outperforming stock market returns.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffcc00;\"><strong>Case 2: 17 Year Period<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now I have picked a year (1995) where the first year returns from Sensex is negative. Both are long term and both are true!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">A few things to remember:<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fixed Deposits are not totally risk free. There is <strong>reinvestment risk<\/strong>. As you can see the fixed deposit rates have gone down to the extent of 4% in 2002. So you should lock your investment in fixed deposits when you are getting good returns. Right now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apnaplan.com\/recurring-deposits-start-now-to-gain-from-high-interest-rates\/\">its good time to lock in long term fixed deposits.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The other thing to note is the extent of out-performance by stocks is much higher than the extent of out-performance by FDs. So leaving the above numbers apart, stocks though risky have higher chances of giving you higher returns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tip\">Last but not the least asset balancing \u2013 i.e. the right mix of debt and equity instruments is the key to wealth creation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We have always been told that stocks always outperform fixed deposits in the long run.
